About

A software engineer who designs websites people actually enjoy using

Hi, I'm Alysia. I've spent more than eight years building software professionally: seven of them at Bench Accounting, North America's largest bookkeeping service for small businesses, and now as the founding engineer at a digital health startup. Along the way I've mentored bootcamp students at Lighthouse Labs, sat on a front-end technical steering committee, and shipped products used by tens of thousands of people. Engineering is still my full-time job; web design is the part-time practice where that experience goes to work for local businesses.

That background matters for your website more than you might expect. Most small business sites are built by designers who can't engineer or agencies that outsource the build. The result looks fine in a portfolio and falls apart in the real world: slow pages, broken forms, invisible on Google. I build websites the way product companies build software, with the polish of a design studio and the rigour of an engineering team, at a scale that makes sense for a small business.

I live in Squamish, and I run a small business here myself: Plantiful, a rare-plant shop that ships across Canada. So when we talk about your website, I am not guessing at what it is like to compete for customers as a local business. I do it too.

When I'm not building websites, I'm propagating far too many plants, mentoring people getting into tech, and enjoying everything the Sea to Sky has to offer.

How I work

Honest scoping

If a template, a simpler build, or no new website at all would serve you better, that is the advice you will get. A good reputation in a small town is worth more than any single project.

Accessibility is not optional

Every site is built so that customers using screen readers, keyboards, or older devices get the same welcome as everyone else. It is better for people and, conveniently, better for Google.

Plain language

You will never get a report you need a developer to translate. Progress updates, analytics, and recommendations all arrive in words that make sense.

Built to last

Fast static sites, boring reliable hosting, and automated deployments mean your website keeps working without a monthly emergency.
